Giving birth in the United States has gradually become less safe throughout the years rather than more safe. My hope is that telling these stories will help create a more informed public that will make birth giving a safer, more seamless process.
Experience
Emily is a freelance writer for Verywell Family. She earned her master's degree in health and science journalism in 2021. During graduate school, Emily focused on the pregnancy/maternal health beat where she was able to pursue stories on topics ranging from the increased demand for home birth to the experience of incarcerated mothers.
Emily has interned with news outlets such as WNYC and NBC where she had the opportunity to tell stories through audio, print, and video. She has assisted on several investigative projects which have uncovered truths about everything from suspicious business practices to healthcare fraud.
Before pursuing a career in journalism, Emily was practicing storytelling of a different kind as a park ranger for the National Park Service. During her decade with the organization, Emily was able to work at parks around the country--from Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty--relaying the site's history and importance to curious visitors.
Emily also works as a digital content producer for Audacy, Inc. where she writes stories of both local and national relevance.
Education
Emily received her bachelor's degree in psychology from New York University and her master's degree in journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.
